The SmartSampler2 currently uses TagoIO as the telemetry platform.
To keep the system compatible with existing deployments while also supporting newer infrastructure, the telemetry setup provides three connection methods:
- Tago (Smart Sampler Solutions)
- Tago (Custom)
For all new systems, the recommended provider is:
Tago (Smart Sampler Solutions)
This is the default and preferred mode for current and future SmartSampler2 deployments.

1. Tago – Smart Sampler Solutions
This is the preferred telemetry mode for new SmartSampler2 systems.
In this mode, the SmartSampler2 connects to the managed Smart Sampler Solutions telemetry infrastructure. Each device is normally linked to its own virtual twin automatically.
Required fields
Usually, no additional configuration is required.
In some cases, the following field may need to be provided:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| APN | Required only if the SIM card provider needs a specific APN. |
Optional Token/ID field
The Token/ID field can optionally be used to enter a valid SmartSampler2 serial number.
This allows one physical device to send data to the virtual twin of another device.
This is useful when:
- a SmartSampler2 is replaced in the field
- the measuring location should stay linked to the same virtual twin
- historical data should continue under the same device identity
- the physical hardware changes, but the installed station should remain the same in the dashboard
In normal use, the Token/ID field should be left empty.
Typical use
Use this mode for:
- all new SmartSampler2 systems
- standard Smart Sampler Solutions dashboards
- managed customer deployments
- field replacements where a device should continue using an existing virtual twin
2. Tago – Custom
Custom mode is intended for customers who operate their own TagoIO setup or require a fully manual telemetry configuration.
In this mode, all connection fields must be filled in manually.
Required fields
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| APN | APN of the SIM card provider. |
| Token/ID | Device token or ID used by the customer system. |
| Username | MQTT username. |
| Password | MQTT password. |
| Server | Target MQTT server. |
Token/ID
To get an Token/ID, create a new device in Tago. Navigate to Devices and find the button “+Add Device” in the top right corner. Search and select “TagoTiP over MQTT”, apply settings as required and give your device a unique “Serial Number/Device Identifier”.
Username/Password
This step has to be performed only once. Navigate to Devices and find the button “Authorization” in the top right corner. Generate an new Username/Password combination by clicking “Generate”. Select as Token format “TagoTiP(s) MQTT”. This combination can be used for all new devices.
Supported servers
The SmartSampler2 can connect to one of the designated TagoIO MQTT servers:
mqtt.tip.eu-w1.tago.io
mqtt.tip.us-e1.tago.ioThe correct server depends on the customer’s TagoIO region, which can be looked up on the Home screen of your instance.
Typical use
Use this mode when:
- the customer runs their own TagoIO environment
- the customer manages device tokens and MQTT credentials directly
- a non-standard telemetry setup is required
- Smart Sampler Solutions support provides custom connection details
Recommended Provider Selection
| Provider | Recommended for | Required configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Tago Smart Sampler Solutions | New SmartSampler2 systems | Usually none, APN only if required |
| Tago Legacy | Older dashboards and existing legacy systems | Unique Token/ID |
| Tago Custom | Customer-managed TagoIO setup | APN, Token/ID, Username, Password, Server |
Practical Examples
Standard new deployment
A new SmartSampler2 is delivered to a customer and should connect to the Smart Sampler Solutions dashboard.
Use:
Provider: Tago Smart Sampler Solutions
APN: only if required by SIM provider
Token/ID: emptyReplacing a device in the field
A SmartSampler2 installed at a fixed monitoring location is replaced by another SmartSampler2.
The new hardware should continue sending data to the same dashboard device as before.
Use:
Provider: Tago Smart Sampler Solutions
Token/ID: serial number of the original device / virtual twinThis keeps the data linked to the existing virtual twin instead of creating or using the replacement device’s default twin.
Customer-managed TagoIO instance
A customer wants to connect the SmartSampler2 to their own TagoIO setup.
Use:
Provider: Tago Custom
APN: customer SIM APN
Token/ID: customer device token or ID
Username: customer MQTT username
Password: customer MQTT password
Server: mqtt.tip.eu-w1.tago.ioor
Server: mqtt.tip.us-e1.tago.iodepending on the customer’s TagoIO region.
Notes
For most users, Tago Smart Sampler Solutions should be selected.
Only use Legacy or Custom mode when required by an existing setup or when instructed by Smart Sampler Solutions support.
