4.5 Telemetry

The Telemetry area configures and monitors cellular communication between SmartSampler2 and the configured remote service. When SmartSampler2 is equipped and configured for telemetry, it can send sensor data and status information, receive supported remote messages, and maintain local data availability when the server connection is interrupted.

Connect to SmartSampler2 over USB or through the supported wireless connection, then allow SmartConfig2 to retrieve the device configuration automatically. Use Reload Settings only when automatic retrieval did not complete or a deliberate refresh is needed.

Telemetry workflow

  1. Connect SmartConfig2 to SmartSampler2.
  2. Open Telemetry.
  3. Configure the available telemetry settings and provider details.
  4. Use General to check sampler, network, and server status.
  5. Review feedback and local storage when a remote record is delayed.

SmartSampler2 combines enabled sensor and module readings into the data sent for monitoring, storage, and telemetry. Payloads can include configured variables, timestamps where supported, and status information. Basic telemetry can also report analytic channel values and whether reported values are within their configured limits.

Telemetry sections

  • General – Check SmartSampler2, cellular network, and server status; review telemetry-module and GPS information; and send a manual dashboard message.
  • Settings – Configure the available telemetry provider, connection details, GPS and power behavior, time updates, error reporting, and related options.
  • Debug (Advanced Mode) – Use supported diagnostic controls when troubleshooting. Enable this view under Advanced > Settings > Advanced options.

Queued data and local history

When the server connection is available, SmartSampler2 queues outgoing telemetry and sends the queued records. After queued transmission is completed, stored sensor history is checked for additional records. Error records are included when error reporting is enabled.

If cellular or server connectivity is unavailable, data can be retained in local history storage for later handling rather than being discarded immediately. A missing remote record therefore does not necessarily mean that the measurement has been lost. Review the Data Storage area when you need to inspect or download local files.

Connection management and recovery

SmartSampler2 manages the cellular network and server connections during operation. It checks network registration, verifies the server connection, maintains connected operation, and polls for supported incoming messages. If communication is lost or the cellular module becomes unresponsive, SmartSampler2 attempts recovery by reconnecting or restarting the cellular connection.

A network connection attempt can restart when the configured startup warm-up period expires without registration. Recovery time can vary with the current connection operation and network conditions. Allow the device time to complete its recovery sequence before treating a temporary disconnected state as a hardware fault.

Live data

When the required telemetry connection is available, live data can be enabled to send current operating information. Live data is separate from the normal storage workflow and can be enabled or disabled from the applicable telemetry control. The interface reports the live-data state, including when live updates are disabled.

Sensor readings and stored records continue to follow the configured sensor-read and save behavior. The save interval determines how often sampled readings are written to storage; it does not make every live update a stored record.

Remote connection

SmartConfig2 supports a wireless connection to SmartSampler2 through an installed LTE telemetry module and the configured remote service. A remote connection requires the SmartSampler2 system serial number, username, and password. You can choose the connection alias freely. Enter credentials only in the SmartConfig2 connection interface and do not publish them in support requests or screenshots.
