2. Hardware Interfaces

The SmartSampler2 communicates with a computer via USB.

  • Connector type: Mini USB-B
  • Cable requirement:
    • Use the originally supplied cable to ensure a waterproof connection.
    • Standard Mini USB-B cables will work for data, but will not provide a watertight seal.
  • Connection instructions:
    1. Insert the Mini USB-B plug carefully into the socket.
    2. Hand-tighten the waterproof screw connector if using the supplied cable.
    3. Do not overtighten the screw connection, as this may damage the USB socket.

2.1 I/O & Pinouts

  • Universal Ports:
    • 8 configurable ports (sensor, pump, valve, communication).
    • Each port can be enabled with a license (configured in SmartConfig2.1).
    • Selectable Supply voltages via Jumper: 3.3 V, 5 V, or Vin.
  • Protection: Built-in ESD diodes, surge protection, and isolation where required.
  • Pinout diagrams are provided per connector (see appendix).

2.2 Communication Ports

  • RS-485: Differential interface, 120 Ω termination jumper, biasing resistors onboard.
  • RS-232: Single-ended serial port.
  • I²C: For expansion modules and Pods.
  • UART1 / UART2: Custom communication or module interfacing.
  • SDI-12: One-wire sensor bus, standard compliant.
  • Note: Baud rate, addressing, parity, and timeouts are configured in SmartConfig2.1, not in hardware.

2.3 Indicators & Buttons

  • LED indicators:
    • Steady on = configuration mode (powered, not started).
    • Blinking slow = working mode (normal operation).
    • Blinking fast = error condition.
  • Reset button: Restarts the device.
  • Recovery jumper: Forces factory defaults for recovery.
